What is Coaching?

In recent years, specifically post pandemic, coaching has gained momentum. It has always existed in specific industrial circles, but is currently gaining prominence in various organizational fields. 


Coaching is the practice of assisting and directing someone to reach their personal or professional objectives. It entails a one-on-one connection between the coach and the client, during which the coach offers direction, constructive criticism, and encouragement to assist the client recognize their strengths and shortcomings, establish realistic goals, and create a plan of action to achieve those goals.


In addition to focusing on a number of topics like personal development, professional advancement, leadership abilities, business strategy, and more, coaching can take various forms. While some coaches focus on particular areas, others adopt a more all-encompassing strategy that covers a range of concerns.


Coaches typically use a range of tools and techniques to help their clients achieve their goals, such as assessments, exercises, and feedback. The coaching process is usually structured around a series of sessions that take place over a set period of time.


Overall, coaching is a collaborative process that is focused on helping individuals to unlock their full potential, overcome challenges, and achieve success in their personal and professional lives.

Coaching by the numbers

According to a survey conducted by the International Coach Federation (ICF) in 2020, the number of individuals who have received coaching worldwide has continued to increase steadily.Here are some key statistics from the survey:

  • In 2020, an estimated 71% of organizations reported that they had used coaching as a development tool for their employees.
  • 93% of coaches report having received some form of coach-specific training.
  • The most common reasons individuals seek coaching are to improve their communication skills, increase productivity, and improve work-life balance.
  • The majority of coaches work with individual clients (87%), while 13% of coaches work with organizations.
  • In terms of coaching modalities, the most commonly used are one-on-one coaching (83%), group/team coaching (54%), and mentor coaching (37%).
